Bear Safety at Dolomite Drift
While it’s rare to encounter a bear during your stay, Dolomite Drift is located in bear country, and it’s important to be informed and prepared. This page provides practical tips on how to avoid attracting bears, what to do if you see one, and how to interpret things like tagged bears. By following a few simple guidelines, you can help keep both wildlife and people safe — and enjoy your stay with peace of mind.
-
Manage Food and Garbage
Never leave food or garbage outside, even in sealed bags or containers — store everything indoors or in bear-proof bins.
Clean the BBQ thoroughly after each use, including the grease trap. Store it indoors if possible when not in use.
Do not feed wildlife, intentionally or accidentally. This includes leaving food scraps outside or on the firepit.
Avoid using scented toiletries (like fruity body wash or perfumed shampoo) outdoors.
Keep coolers inside the cottage, not on decks or porches — bears have an excellent sense of smell.
-
Be Aware Outdoors
Make noise while walking around the property, especially at dawn or dusk when bears are more active.
Keep dogs on leash or under control, as they can attract or provoke bears.
Bring bird feeders inside if they’re out — bears love birdseed.

If You See a Bear
Stay calm and go indoors. Do not approach, feed, or try to photograph the bear.
Alert others at the cottage.
If the bear doesn’t leave or is acting aggressively, call the Bear Wise reporting line: 1-866-514-2327.
